Moisturising is not only for dry skin. It is a daily essential for every skin type. It helps your skin retain water, keeping the skin soft, smooth and healthy. Proper moisturisation strengthens your skin barrier and prevents irritation, dryness and trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). Dehydrated skin produces more oil to compensate, hence moisturiser is essential for those with oily skin too. Well moisturised skin is plumper and appears more luminous and healthy.
Oily skin:
Look of lightweight, oil-free, gel-based and non-comedogenic moisturisers
Niacinamide and centella asiatica are good ingredients too look for
Avoid heavy oils, coconut oil and petrolatum if you are acne prone
Dry skin:
Rich creams with barrier repairing formulas are ideal
Avoid alcohol heavy products
Ceramides, hyaluronic acid, squalele and urea are good ingredients to look for
Avoid fragrance if your skin is also sensitive
Sensitive skin:
Fragrance free, minimal ingredients and soothing actives are essential
Avoid essential oils, alcohol, exfoliating acids - unless prescribed
Centella asiatica, panthenol, ceramindes can be soothing
One must also be considerate of the environmental factors while choosing moisturiser, the temperature and humidity play a vital role in hown the moisturiser acts.
Hot/humid climate- gel/water based creams
Cold/dry climate- use creams with ceramides and occlusives, apply on damp skin
High altitude- use barrier supporting creams, top up with hydrating mists
Hot/dry climate- use gel based creams and use a humidifier or mist
Choosing the right moisturiser or for that matter right skincare product may seem like rocket science since there are a lot of factors that must be considered. Going wrong in one of the steps may lead to hindrance in the results/ may even cause irritation of the skin or pilling of products.
So leave the headache to the experts and just enjoy the glowing results 🙂
